Close Protection Officers (CPOs) protect high‑risk or high‑profile clients—such as executives, celebrities, politicians, ultra‑high‑net‑worth individuals, or witnesses—from threats including assault, kidnap, stalking, public disorder, and targeted crime. Core duties typically include advance reconnaissance of venues and routes, threat and vulnerability assessments, journey management, and maintaining protective presence around the principal during movements and public appearances.
The role extends beyond “standing next to the client” and often involves coordinating with drivers, residential security, corporate security, and law enforcement, as well as managing information security and media exposure risks. CPOs must balance safety with the client’s need for privacy, comfort, and business activity, which often requires operating discreetly and integrating seamlessly into the client’s daily routine and travel patterns.
Long and irregular hours, frequent travel, and periods of boredom punctuated by moments of intense stress require resilience, discipline, and a stable temperament. Professionalism also involves discretion, emotional intelligence, and the ability to manage a close working relationship with demanding clients without becoming either over‑familiar or intimidated.
Physically, close protection work demands good all‑round fitness: cardiovascular endurance for long days on foot, strength for controlling or moving people, and agility for rapid reactions in confined spaces or crowds. Many CPOs maintain regular training in defensive tactics, control and restraint, and sometimes specialist systems such as Krav Maga, alongside weapons proficiency where legally permitted and role‑appropriate.
Sustained stamina is essential to function effectively on extended shifts, often with limited rest, while remaining alert, observant, and able to act decisively. The role also typically requires maintaining competence in protective driving, first aid or tactical medical skills, and safe manual handling of equipment, all of which rely on ongoing physical conditioning and skills rehearsal.
The Close Protection Operative course will teach the candidate how to manage security of a VIP, organise a security team and all the logistics of prevention.
